Avery Trial Media Coverage

Avery trial coverage brings in some cool stuff
Courtroom journals, live video feeds are just a taste

Without a doubt the Steven Avery trial is a tragic story- for both the Halbach and Avery families. However, an interesting side to this case is the unprecendented media coverage- from Ken Kratz's grizzly press conference detailing what evidence was found on the Avery property, to the twists and turns of the current trial. Most news stations in the Green Bay and Milwaukee markets have crews at the trial to deliver daily live reports.

With over 12 different news organizations covering the trial, Calumet County has had to make some major accomodations, including a wired media room for feeding the audio and video, highspeed internet, and plenty of electrical outlets. However, if you're in the courtroom, you won't see anyone with a camera or laptop- because all the news personnel have a special viewing room with a glass window that overlooks the courtroom. There is a mounted camera within the courtoom that is remotely controlled, as well as a cameraman within the viewing room, feeding the video to the pool of reporters.

Some of the features that news organizations are using to boost coverage are:

  • Live streaming video of the court proceedings on the web

  • Journals/blogs of courtroom events, some updated hourly and when something big breaks

  • Stations finding local attorney's to act as legal analysts to comment on the daily developments

  • Stations hosting a rich array of background on the case, "who's who," and slideshow

  • News tickers with the latest Avery trial developments
